Q: What was the first Dickens character that stuck in your head as a child?

A: Oh Fagin, without question. Jewish and vile <Audience laugh>. I didn't know Jews like that then, sadly I do now. <Audience laugh>

This merry interaction came not from a Hitler Youth seminar but from the cosy armchairs of BBC Front Row, a radio show for erudite progressives. Anti-Zionist Nish Kumar—who recently pulled out of a festival because: Israel—was on the show with the purveyor of these words.

Words that somehow seem both out of step with our time and emblematic of it.

The Character of Fagin apparently resonates with Margolyes’ experience of Jews

Imagine the headlines if Elon Musk or Douglas Murray had spat anything remotely comparable about Jews or any other ethnicity (and elicited a laugh from a mainstream audience). This is the true face of the elite snobs that we're so sick of. Here lie (lie!) the hypocrisies, the snobs, the 'Have I Got Newses' and the two tiers, Keir. Because if a working-class bloke from Burnley came out with something similar, he'd possibly be in the docks right now - as might his audience of liberal elite smirkers.  

The Self-Hater(?)

That Miriam Margolyes is Jewish makes this all the more cowardly.

A compelling political strategy of recent times has been to hold up ostensibly self-flagellant dissenters from ethnicities as untouchable evidence of their group's immorality.

For example, those concerned about the harmful impact of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) policies have heralded black social commentators John McWhorter, Coleman Hughes and - with hindsight, mistakenly - fringe lunatic Candace Owens.

This is effective for several reasons:

1. It inoculates supporters against accusations of racism.

2. It tears apart the woke concepts of self-identification and lived experience. These are black people who disagree with the core tenets of the ideology.

However, no matter how tenaciously I've seen Coleman fight against Black Lives Matter and other such woke ideologies, I've never seen him suggest that an ignoble depiction of a black man from literature accurately presents the immutable characters of his race.

Had he done so, would a BBC audience have felt such visceral laughter of recognition?

But what of Margolyes herself? Vile doesn't quite cut it.

She has made a career out of crass, bullying behaviour because of her national treasure status. The fact that she was ever afforded such a status is beyond me but is indicative of an audience that mistakes lewdness for character, poshness for intellect and arrogance for merit.

"I'm not doing any harm," she told the Jewish News in 2020. "I'm just a nice old lady." That's part of the charm. She has made a name for herself by being an old person (in her 80s) who is crass. The humour is simple but effective and plays into this cartoonish way the woke see the world (old people are supposed to be sweet, and therefore, if they swear, they're rebels, and it's hilarious). This is itself an outdated notion. Why shouldn't a woman who came of age in the 1960s have a liberal, sweary streak?

She claims to be anti-bullying, but has said she wished Boris Johnson would die, called John Cleese an arsehole, Mick Jagger a cunt and labelled the Royal Family a "bunch of thick people".

Particularly egregious is what she said about young Leo DiCaprio: "He was a bit smelly because it was very hot in Mexico and young boys don't make themselves fragrant, they don't wash all the bits." Imagine an older actor - say, Robert De Niro - coming out with something similar about a young aspiring actress.

Why do we indulge this bigoted bully?

Her persona is carefully structured around saying the unsayable, yet a closer inspection reveals she knows her audience and takes little risk. She starts sentences with: "You're not supposed to talk about trans, well I will do", before going on a rant parroting the harmful gender ideology of every mainstream TV channel and newspaper.

Some rebel.

Margolyes’ Aggressive Sexuality

One place where she does stand out is in her crude and aggressive sexuality, with her constant efforts to draw us to her masturbation habits. In doing so, she is protected by her status as a lesbian and - again - national treasure. But it’s aggressively sexual in a way that society wouldn’t accept of almost anyone else. She even gloats about having a young couple living with her who put her underwear on for her. Yet, the BBC has a history of letting this kind of in-plain-sight behaviour go unchecked.

Hers is an old-fashioned, Dickensian (literally, in this case) anti-Semitism. As a Jew herself, it is particularly cowardly. It is saying: “These others are the vile ones that you see cariacatured in the Dickens books, but I’m outside of that.”

Just as with her faux-rebel trans stance, her Jew-hating remarks are easy crowd-pleasers for a BBC audience (sad, though this is) disguised as rebellion. She feels protected by her own Jewish ethnicity and - like the Capos in the Holocaust who turned on their own people - takes delight in that contemptible role.

It is everything that is wrong with the woke liberal elite. That Margolyes goes untouched owes to the BBC Halo, or what we might now call the Jimmy Savile effect.

As for Fagin, is it not the BBC that comes out cap-in-hand for funding with a knife to the throat of those who can't cough up?  

Despite all this, mainstream news outlets want to restrict free speech on social media. This is why I rally against their authoritarianism. This is why we speak of a two-tiered system.

While they giggle and laugh at an overly sexual, racist old lady, another old lady - a working-class woman - has just been sentenced
